Maine Democrats Select Troy Jackson to Replace Platner in Senate Race

Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, suspended his campaign in July 2026 after a former partner accused him of sexual assault, which he denied. His campaign had also faced earlier scrutiny over a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol and a history of racist, misogynist and homophobic posts, as well as prior allegations from other former partners reported by the New York Times in June. Following his withdrawal, Maine Democrats launched an expedited process to select a new nominee to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November election. Multiple candidates initially sought the nomination, including former Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Jordan Wood, Nirav Shah, and biopharmaceutical executive Saundra Little, alongside former state Senate President Troy Jackson. By July 20, Jackson had established a clear lead as Bellows, Wood, and Shah ended their campaigns, consolidating support behind him. Democrats formally selected Jackson as their nominee on July 25 at a nomination convention in Bangor, Maine, where he won with 566 votes; Little was his only remaining challenger at the convention. Jackson's selection gave Democrats roughly 100 days before the November general election to campaign against Collins in what is widely described as a nationally watched, must-win race for the party. Jackson, a progressive and former ally of Platner, now moves forward as the official Democratic nominee. The race against Collins is set to proceed with just over three months remaining before Election Day. It remains unresolved how the circumstances of Platner's exit and the compressed nomination timeline will affect Democratic fundraising, voter mobilization, or Jackson's ability to unify the various factions of the party's base heading into the general election.
